Carleton M. Winslows 1915 Spanish colonial architecture tells us about race in America in the way he depicts the welcoming of the white race in California through a woman over a young native boy and a young white boy. The woman represents protection of California. It was the natives land. But even though it was the natives land, they still welcomed the white. Carleton Winslow believed that women were “…intimidating upholders of civilized morality” (Amero 2). Being they had a civilized morality, well organized, followed rules and acted upon good conduct, the white were welcome but not to come and conquer their land from them. Many architects shows their beliefs and many cultural aspects through their building designs, such as today where many people write poetry to express their cultural aspects and the differences among their race and the rest. Another way beliefs and cultures can be seen is in the homes of low, middle, and high class Americans. The home is where the outside can see how successful you are.
