Vinaka Cafe is full of males attempting to glorify their dominance and
emphasize their masculinity by publicly displaying their
intellectualism. I came to this conclusion quickly after watching what
some of the guys were doing and then spending just a couple minutes
with a group of them. They were constantly trying to one-up each other
by knowing more about a given subject. One male would often interject
with words which were not included in my own vocabulary. His elitist
circumlocution included words such as nefarious and others that I
cannot remember as a result of my lack of understanding. Another male
spoke of creating a list of his top ten albums of the year. Among them
were various obscure artists including Handsome Furs and Mount Eerie. A third male was just reading Allen Ginseberg's Howl,
underlining and marking phrases. I asked him if it was for an
assignment and he replied "Well, not particularly. I assigned it to
myself." Having personally read Howl for pleasure I can say
that this was an obvious attempt to display intellectualism as there is
nothing to annotate without specificity of assignment. Watching all of
this, I was reminded of John Smith and how his knowledge of the world
and its technology had impressed Pocahontas. John Smith had shown his
dominance and masculinity by displaying his intelligence which
resulted in Pocahontas' intrigue.
